What you'll love about the area
The Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park is an unspoilt treasure in the heart of the Auvergne. Stretching across vast upland horizons, this area lies between the Dore valley on one side and the ridges of the Monts du Forez on the other. It is an absolute paradise for lovers of wide open spaces and slow travel.
Here, nature sets the pace through immense fir forests, mysterious peat bogs and the famous "hautes chaumes", those wind-swept high-altitude moorlands where herds graze in summer. It is an exceptional playground for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding.
But it is also a living, vibrant heritage. Centuries-old skills remain proud and intact: art cutlery in Thiers, handmade paper at the Richard de Bas mill, and the making of Fourme d'Ambert, that wonderfully mild AOP blue cheese. Characterful villages and medieval castles complete this picture of an authentic, restorative France.
