What you'll love about the area
Saint-Bonnet-le-Château is a small medieval town full of character, perched in the Forez mountains. Its collegiate church with 15th-century murals, its narrow streets and its ramparts make it a place steeped in history. The village is also the French capital of the pétanque boule, with its own dedicated museum.
The Forez mountains offer lovely walks through meadows, forests and mid-mountain landscapes, with views stretching as far as Mont Blanc on clear days. The Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park is close by for days out in nature.
Saint-Étienne and its Museum of Modern Art are nearby. Le Puy-en-Velay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and starting point of the Way of St James, can be reached on a day trip. The Loire gorges round off your outings with spectacular scenery.
Local markets, fourme de Montbrison, Côtes du Forez wines and local producers make for a delicious discovery. With its heritage, nature and gastronomy, the Loire offers an authentic stay.
