What you'll love about the area
Gap is the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes, one of the sunniest towns in France, nestled at an altitude of 735 m at the crossroads of the Southern Alps. Its historic centre is lovely to explore on foot, with its little squares, fountains, cathedral and Provençal markets. In winter, Orcières-Merlette, Superdévoluy and the Champsaur resorts offer downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on slopes suited to all levels.
In summer, the alpine lakes open up for swimming and water sports. Lac de Serre-Ponçon, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, offers beaches, sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking against a spectacular mountain backdrop. Hikes in the Parc National des Écrins and in the Dévoluy for all levels.
Provençal markets, local alpine produce and mountain restaurants round off a stay combining sport, nature and the art of living in the Southern Alps.
