Alsace Christmas markets: where to stay when Strasbourg is full. Villages, foothills and valleys, real budget, and getting there by train or shuttle.

Strasbourg's Christmas market welcomed 3 million visitors in 2025, according to the city's own review, and half of them came from the surrounding Eurométropole. Those locals go home to sleep; everyone else competes for city-centre beds, whose price doubles in December. If you want to enjoy the Christmas markets in Alsace without paying that premium, the answer fits in one sentence: stay fifteen to thirty minutes out, in the foothills, the wine villages or a Vosges valley, and reach the stalls by train, by tram from a park-and-ride, or by shuttle bus. Here is where, when, and on what terms.
Because an Alsatian Christmas market is not a place, it is a route. Strasbourg spreads its stalls over a dozen squares, from Place Broglie to Place Kléber. Colmar has six markets, all within walking distance of each other. You do not spend your trip at one address, you walk. What you need from your lodging is not to be next to the stalls, but to be easy to reach and quiet once the door is shut.
The budget points the same way. As early as 2023, regional broadcaster France 3 Grand Est ran a story on Strasbourg hotels whose prices double in December. Fifteen kilometres away, that doubling is limited to Saturday night, if it happens at all, and your evening at the market is exactly the same.
The markets run for about five weeks, but pressure on accommodation is concentrated on weekends. Colmar has published its dates: six markets from 23 November to 29 December 2026. Strasbourg only promises "late November 2026" and had not released its official dates as of 22 September; the 2025 edition ran from 26 November to 24 December. Keep an eye on noel.strasbourg.eu before you lock in your nights.
The real dividing line is elsewhere. French school Christmas holidays run from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027 across the whole country. Before 19 December, only Fridays and Saturdays are packed: a Monday-to-Thursday stay gets you the same stalls and lights, walkable lanes and off-season rates. Our guide on when to book a holiday rental for Christmas and New Year explains how those prices move.
Look south and west, twenty to thirty minutes away by train. Molsheim, Obernai, Barr, Erstein, Brumath and Wasselonne all have direct regional trains (TER) to Strasbourg's central station, their own smaller Christmas markets, and restaurants at normal prices. Obernai ticks every box: ramparts, half-timbered houses, a village market and a station a few minutes' walk from the old town.
Sélestat deserves a special mention. Halfway along the Strasbourg-Colmar line, it is the one base that lets you do both cities without a car and without moving lodgings. If you are driving, Strasbourg's park-and-ride car parks, run by the CTS transport network on the edge of the city, cost €4.20 a day, with unlimited tram and bus travel included for 1 to 7 people until 2 am. The outskirts are not a compromise here; they are the best vantage point.
This is where staying outside the centre pays off most. Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, Eguisheim, Turckheim and Ribeauvillé are all less than twenty minutes from Colmar, and they are the postcard you came for: narrow lanes, half-timbered facades, garlands, and barely anyone once evening falls. Eguisheim and Turckheim hold their markets from 27 November to 30 December 2026, Riquewihr until 20 December, and Ribeauvillé turns medieval on 5-6 and 12-13 December.
The practical key is the shuttle. Christmas shuttle buses leave Colmar station for these villages, as well as Munster and Neuf-Brisach. The lines to Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé run Friday to Sunday only, at €17 for a day ticket with unlimited rides; Eguisheim is also served on weekdays. Tickets are sold online only, in limited numbers, from Thursday 12 November 2026 at noon. Staying in a village and visiting Colmar by shuttle works just as well as the other way round.
When the plain is fully booked, head uphill. The Munster valley, Orbey, Labaroche, Le Bonhomme and Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines are thirty to forty-five minutes from Colmar, at December rates that bear no comparison with the plain. On the Vosges side, Gérardmer, La Bresse, Anould and Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle add something the Alsace plain cannot offer: snow, often, and ski slopes nearby.
This combination is the best use of a full week in December: two days of markets, two days of snow, one base at valley prices. It does require a car, because beyond the foothills trains thin out and only the Munster line is covered by the shuttles. With children, it also has the merit of alternating the pace between crowds and open air.
A place thirty kilometres away with good transport beats one ten kilometres away with none. The backbone is the Strasbourg-Sélestat-Colmar rail line, covered in about half an hour by direct trains. In Colmar, the park-and-ride at the exhibition centre (Parc des Expositions) costs €3 a day, with a shuttle to the centre every ten minutes on late November and December weekends; and the city's buses are free on 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 December 2026.
The selection rule fits in one line: pick lodging within a ten-minute walk of a station, a shuttle stop or a tram terminus, and check the time of the last ride back before ordering your third mulled wine. City-centre parking on a December Saturday is the textbook hidden cost: invisible when you choose, painful when you pay.
This choice has a price, and it would be dishonest to hide it. First, village markets are not open every day. Kaysersberg's opens only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 27 November to 20 December; Bergheim's runs for just two weekends. If you plan around a specific village, check its own calendar.
Second, the last train and the last shuttle leave early. Third, most hosts require a two-night minimum on December weekends, which makes a single Saturday night hard to find. Fourth, snow is rare on the plain; fog and drizzle are not. Finally, in a village, everything is closed on Sunday.
All of this is manageable if you agree the details with your host before paying anything: number of nights, arrival time, cancellation terms. In France, a deposit can be either "arrhes", which either party can walk away from at a set cost, or an "acompte", which commits both sides; ask which one you are paying.
When lodging is half the budget, the absence of commission is not a detail. Driing is a French commission-free platform that puts travellers in direct contact with hosts: no service fee is added to the price the host sets, which means 17% less on average than a commission-based platform, and up to 23% in the Grand Est region. Hosts pay an annual subscription instead; nothing is taken from your stay.
The platform's geography fits the topic. Nearly 99% of listed properties are outside France's thirty-five largest cities, and the September 2026 count confirms it for Alsace: Kaysersberg, Sélestat, Nothalten, Labaroche, Wuenheim, Rombach-le-Franc, with a median displayed price of around €65 a night. That is exactly the ring of villages described above, all on our Grand Est holiday rentals page.
How it works deserves to be stated plainly. You contact the host through the form on the listing or the contact details shown on it, you agree the terms together, and payment and contract are handled directly between the two of you. What protects you is therefore not a payment system but the checks made beforehand: before any listing goes live, the host's identity is verified, ownership of the property is proven with documents, and the host has a real conversation with the Driing team. You can browse Driing's rentals region by region.
Where should I stay for the Strasbourg Christmas market if not in the city centre?
In the towns linked by regional train: Molsheim, Obernai, Barr, Erstein, Brumath, Wasselonne or Sélestat, twenty to thirty minutes from the central station. They have their own Christmas markets and prices far below the city centre.
What are the dates of the Alsace Christmas markets in 2026?
Colmar has published its dates: 23 November to 29 December 2026. Strasbourg announces an opening in late November but had not released official dates as of 22 September; in 2025 the market ran from 26 November to 24 December. Villages each have their own calendar, sometimes weekends only.
How much does accommodation cost in Alsace during the Christmas markets?
It depends on the distance from the centre. In Strasbourg itself, hotel rates double in December. In the foothill and wine villages, rentals listed on Driing in September 2026 show a median price of around €65 a night.
Can I visit the Alsace Christmas markets without a car?
Yes, as long as you stay on the Strasbourg-Sélestat-Colmar rail line. Shuttle buses then run from Colmar station to Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, Eguisheim, Turckheim, Munster and Neuf-Brisach, mostly Friday to Sunday and with online booking.
Is it better to stay near Strasbourg or near Colmar?
Colmar if you come for the half-timbered villages and the vineyards, Strasbourg for the size and variety of its markets. Sélestat, halfway along the same rail line, lets you avoid choosing.
When should I book accommodation for the Alsace Christmas markets?
For December weekends, book in summer or early autumn: it is the busiest time of year in Alsace. For a midweek stay before 19 December, you can still find places in November. Shuttle tickets go on sale on 12 November 2026.
Are the village Christmas markets in Alsace open every day?
No, and this is the most common mistake. Kaysersberg opens only Friday to Sunday, Bergheim for two weekends, and Ribeauvillé holds its medieval market on two weekends. Check each village's calendar before fixing your dates.
Is there snow in Alsace during the Christmas markets?
Rarely on the plain, where December tends to be grey, damp and foggy. For snow, head up into the Vosges: the Munster valley, Orbey, Gérardmer, La Bresse. It is a good reason to stay in a valley and come down to the markets for the day.
The Alsace Christmas markets are explored on foot and left by train. With 3 million visitors in Strasbourg and hotel rates that double in December, the city centre is the most expensive place to do exactly what you could do from Obernai, Sélestat or Kaysersberg. Distance is not the right criterion; transport links are.
Three decisions make the difference. Choose weekdays over weekends until the school holidays start on 19 December 2026. Choose a village within a ten-minute walk of a station, a shuttle stop or a tram terminus. And check the calendar of the village you have in mind, because many only open on certain days.
That leaves the cost of the bed. With no commission added to the host's price, a stay arranged directly with the host costs 17% less on average, and up to 23% in Grand Est. Browse rentals in Alsace and the Vosges on driing.co, contact the host from the listing, and agree your dates before the December weekends fill up.
Dates, timetables and prices are those published on official websites as of 22 September 2026. They may change: check them before booking accommodation or transport.
